No Visitors Today

No Visitors Today – Jacqueline Nash

Old bones creaking,
joints stiff and aching,
she tries to smile
but her heart is breaking.

No visitors today,
hours tick by slowly,
she sits in her chair
feeling painfully lonely.

Another cup of tea
with a biscuit or two,
to pass the time,
to help get her through.

Friends and family
long since gone away,
only memories left
for her company.

How time changes
who we once used to be,
taking youthful looks,
our health and dignity.

An old generation
no-one wants to see,
for it seems that age
brings invisibility.

How many old people
sit in their chairs today
waiting for a visitor
to call their way.
